In the News: Invisible Children

Our first “In the News”. YAY! This will be different form other “In the News” posts because this story isn’t covered by the media as it should. The “invisible” children are children living in Northern Uganda. They are kidnapped and forced to fight for the rebels against the Ugandan government. The kids that are not kidnapped sleep in terrible conditions. Some of them sleep in wet corridor. Some of them have only one meal per week. They don’t even have the oppertunity to go to school like kids in the West. There was a documentry about this called “Invisible Children”. You can find more information on the website: http://www.invisiblechildren.com/home.php . If you are interested in donating you can donate via the website.

Comming Soon: Fast Facts

Fast facts are 5 facts about something happening in the world. Some are shocking, some outraging, some just different. You will probably learn something new every time you take a look.

Child Stars Gone Bad

Many of you probably pickup People magazine and see that Brittney was admitted to rehab for the 15 billionth time. Or more recently Miley Cyrus posing topless for Vanity Fair that got national attention. Or Michael Jackson, probably one of the worst cases of a child star going bad going in and out of court on child abuse charges a couple years ago.

Why does every child star that bumps along ends up going bad? It because they think that they are invincible because they are famous. I never known that the amount of followers a person have gives someone card Blanche to do whatever they please. Do they have no shame? Do they know that there life is suddenly a fishbowl once you record that first album or air your first show. Or is Hollywood is thrusting adulthood too fast on these kids and there is a pressure for them to grow up too fast?

You might be thinking, why would I care what a celebrity does? But it has a negative effect on our children. Even after the Vanity Fair incident with Miley Cyrus, kids still tune into Disney channel and watch “Hannah Montana” on a daily basis. Some kids probably have seen the “Best of Both Worlds” concert/movie and have Hannah Montana everything in their room. Even though stars do bad things, children still idolize them. This is a problem with parents because no one wants their kid to be making the wrong decisions in their life. Also they don’t want someone’s negative actions to be a model for theirs. But why do kids idolize celebrities because children need a role model in their life. What can parents do? They can show their kids non-celebrity role model like a scientist, a lawyer, a respected family member. Try being a mentor for your child and tell them that there is more to life than Hannah Montana .

Speaking of parents, where are these kid folks, anyway . Are they parenting or counting all the money that is made off their kid? It is really sad. These children are expected to perform at their best, miss school to do that, and they don’t have parents that care. I’m not trying to say that all showbiz parents are bad. There are some showbiz parents that are good, but most of them are being agents than parents.

While no one knows the true reason why child stars go bad, they are is something that the public can do and that is to focus less on celebrities and Hollywood and more on world issues and accomplishments.
